Seeley Lake, at 1,300 acres, is another of western Montana’s prized recreation spots. Located near the confluence of the Clearwater and Blackfoot Rivers, this heavily used summer resort is surrounded with cabins, beaches, and picnic and camping areas. The lake sits in a beautiful setting of larch, fir, and pine forests with vegetation reaching right down to the water’s edge. It is a rather long, narrow lake with little shoal area and a fairly rapid drop-off. The bottom plunges to 110 feet within a few feet from shore. As the lake sits at approximately a 4,000-foot elevation, the nights cool down quite rapidly in the summer, and the water in the lake stays cool all summer. Cool temperatures don’t deter recreational activities, however, and it’s likely you’ll see plenty of water-skiers on the lake, especially on the weekends. There are occasional conflicts between young ski enthusiasts and anglers, so be prepared to assert your right to fish. Usually a word of caution or warning will suffice, and most skiers will leave you undisturbed.
