Despite a modest elevation of 12,498 feet, the standard route on Ptarmigan Peak covers more than 3,800 feet of elevation gain in a 12-mile round-trip. This is a good, full day out. The Class 1 trail makes it easy to daydream among the vanilla-scented pines. Above treeline, the views of Lake Dillon, the Tenmile Range, and the Gore Range are outstanding. Laskey Gulch is a hidden trailhead that offers a quiet, local’s secret that goes to Ptarmigan Pass and, if you like, Ptarmigan Peak.
