The name may be a bit deceiving, but Parson’s Mountain is still the nicest national forest campground in the district. The mountain itself is actually an 800-foot peak that subtly stands out amid the recreation area. Two lovely picnic areas rest alongside a small, brown mountain lake. One is open to the public, while the other is dedicated for campers only. Several hiking trails traverse the area, and one even leads to the summit of Parson’s Mountain itself. You can fish from the banks, or use the boat ramp to head out on the 28-acre lake. The launch and lake are open to nonmotorized boats only, and you must carry a South Carolina state fishing license if you plan on casting a line.
