Horses, cattle, and even goats fill the countryside as you travel through the Sumter National Forest on your way to Lick Fork Lake. The picnic area here is easily one of the nicest ones I’ve seen in the state. Stone walls create tiers of tables and grills overlooking the lush green grass in the swim area. While the day-use area and campground stay open through mid-November, the swim area closes October 1. The lake itself is brown in color but very inviting and can be enjoyed either by land or by water. A 2-mile hiking trail loops around the lake, or you can launch a canoe or kayak and explore it in its entirety. The Horn Creek Trail is also located within the recreation area and is open to hikers and mountain bikers. If you’re an avid mountain biker, it is recommended you head down the road a bit farther and explore the Forks Area Trail System.
