This backpack trip leads from Standley Guard Station, along the jagged crest of Washboard Ridge, to Bear Creek Trail. The Washboard Trail junction is unmarked at Standley Guard Station. If you stand in front (east) of the old guard station cabin and look east-southeast, a path can be seen heading through the small timber. This path is the Washboard Trail. Fill your water bottles at Standley Spring or from the creek just southeast of the cabin. There is no water along the trail for the first 4.6 miles. Be sure to treat, boil, or filter the water. At first the trail climbs gently to the southeast through small timber. Soon it flattens out and crosses a ridgetop meadow heading generally south. The ridge narrows (7,560 ft.) 0.7 mile from Standley Guard Station, and the view to the south opens up. China Cap is the prominent peak to the south across the Minam River drainage, but many other, mostly unnamed, peaks can also be seen.
