Ice Lake is the normal base camp for parties climbing the Matterhorn. Ice Lake is often seen in photographs because it is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Wallowa Mountains. The fishing can also be very good for 10- to 12-inch brook trout. (Trail 1808) The trail begins at Wallowa Lake Trailhead, first passing through Pacific Power Company land. It also goes a short distance through Wallowa Lake State Park before reaching the national forest. No special permission is needed to cross these lands on the trail. Ice Lake Trail (1808) turns right (west) off the West Fork Wallowa River Trail (1820) 2.6 miles south of the trailhead 8500 (5,530 ft.)
