The Ozark Trail is Missouri’s version of the Appalachian Trail. As of 2013, many sections of the trail are still under construction. The section of trail from Taum Sauk Mountain State Park to Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park is considered by many to be the best portion of the trail. This section offers rugged terrain, the highest point in the state, and beautiful scenery. Bring your swimsuit for this one and plan plenty of time to soak in the pools at Johnson’s Shut-Ins. With over 350 miles of mostly linked trail sections, the Ozark Trail is the premier backpacking destination in Missouri. Future plans for the trail have it reaching from St. Louis to the Arkansas border and then linking with the Ozark Highland Trail in Arkansas to create a 700-mile trail and through-hiker paradise. Deer, turkeys, bobcats, bears, and bald eagles are just a few of the wild animals that you may encounter while hiking over the rugged hills of the Ozarks.
