This trip forms a loop that takes you back up and over the Puente Hills, revealing dramatic views of the high San Gabriel Mountains before returning you to the shaded oak woodland charm of the canyon.
Head west from the small equestrian warm-up ring on a gravel road. Eventually the gravel gives way to dirt, and the trail dips out of the sun and into the welcome shade of a dense grove of native oaks. At 0.3 mile, keep right at the junction with the Gray Squirrel Trail to continue north. The oak forest falls behind you as you head toward the Puente Hills, keeping straight at 0.6 mile and reaching a major junction (and a crest) at 0.8 mile.
