This expansive campground on Shields Lake offers a large swimming beach and access to the lake (which marks the start of the Cannon River). The lake is a good source of walleye, largemouth bass, crappie, northern pike, and bluegill. On the lake is Heron Island, a bird sanctuary that can’t be accessed by visitors, but campers will often see great blue herons and American egrets here. Hiking trails go up into the bluffs, where there are scenic overlooks among the heavy trees. The Robert Lick Wilderness Area is close by. Campsites are somewhat close together. Pets are allowed.
