This park is on Lake Benton, a good source of fishing for walleye and northern pike. There’s a good beach for swimmers, and canoers and kayakers can enjoy exploring the twists and turns along the lakeshore. There’s not much shade, but the campsites are spaced well. Pets are allowed.
If the northern part of the state is about forests and dramatic glacial terrain, the southern part of the state has an entirely different feel. Here you will find historic old river towns, remnants of the tragic US- Dakota War of 1862, evidence of pioneer life (especially that of Laura Ingalls Wilder), reminders of Jesse James, ancient petroglyphs, country lanes, and, to the west, prairie land that stretches for miles (and will continue to expand, as land used for other purposes is slowly being returned to its native prairie state).
