This park is set along the Watonwan River, a peaceful wooded area with hiking trails to explore the river and woods. The river itself is good for quiet paddling. It’s next to the St. James Country Club, which is open to the public for golfing on its 18-hole course. The campsites are fairly well spaced and heavily wooded, allowing for privacy and shade. Pets are allowed.
If the northern part of the state is about forests and dramatic glacial terrain, the southern part of the state has an entirely different feel. Here you will find historic old river towns, remnants of the tragic US-Dakota War of 1862, evidence of pioneer life (especially that of Laura Ingalls Wilder), reminders of Jesse James, ancient petroglyphs, country lanes, and, to the west, prairie land that stretches for miles.
