This rustic park is on Bright Lake, which is connected to Perry Lake and Clayton Lake, making it popular with paddlers. Herons are frequently spotted on the lake, due to its being the site of a former rookery. Hiking trails wind into the woods and along the lake. Campsites are dispersed and private. Pets are allowed.
If the northern part of the state is about forests and dramatic glacial terrain, the southern part of the state has an entirely different feel. Here you will find historic old river towns, remnants of the tragic US- Dakota War of 1862, evidence of pioneer life (especially that of Laura Ingalls Wilder), reminders of Jesse James, ancient petroglyphs, country lanes, and, to the west, prairie land that stretches for miles.
