This part of the state is one of the most scenic and beloved areas in Minnesota. It’s also steeped in history. Originally settled by the Ojibwe, the northeast area was soon discovered by Europeans who came looking for trade routes and posts. Fur trading was a booming business until the mid-1800s, when the traders and trappers moved farther west to the Mississippi headwaters area. Spafford Campground is in Cloquet, along the St. Louis River. The campground is tucked into a wooded area and has highly scenic fishing piers and docks, and hiking and biking trails. The shops and cafes of Cloquet are an easy stroll from the campground. The campsites are situated fairly closely, so this is not a highly private camping choice. Pets are allowed.
