Savanna Portage is one of Minnesota’s largest state parks at almost 16,000 acres. The park’s ample size really lets it shine in terms of diversity: It’s got rolling hills, bogs, hardwood stands, pine stands, four lakes, and a wide variety of wildlife and animals. In terms of recreation, there are 27 miles of hiking trails and 10 miles of mountain biking trails, groomed snowmobile and cross- country ski trails in the winter, and fishing and swimming in the summer. The campground itself is on the shores of Lake Shumway, a good source of northern pike and crappie. The backpack sites are spread throughout the park, while the hookup sites are in 2 loops, somewhat close together, near Lake Shumway. Pets are allowed.
