Big Sandy Lake is well known as a great fishing lake, with good populations of walleye, northern pike, and bluegill. The lake is part of a historic canoe route that allowed fur traders to move between the Mississippi River and Lake Superior via the Sandy River, which connects the lake to the Mississippi River. Today the former lock house from the dam is open to visitors as a small museum. The surrounding forests are preserved to good effect in the campground, where each campsite has its own driveway and trees, providing excellent privacy. The lake is popular with boaters and water skiers. (Note: Bears have been seen in the vicinity.) Pets are allowed.
