The only national park in Minnesota, Voyageurs is a wonder of geology and ancient natural history. Its terrain has evolved over the centuries due to earthquakes, volcanoes, and glaciers. Today the park acts as a marker between northern and southern hardwood forests. Forty percent of the park is covered in water, and all the campsites must be accessed by boat. Obviously boating and fishing are popular activities, but the park also has extensive sets of hiking trails, ranging from short and easy to long and strenuous, many with scenic overlooks. Some of these trails are open for cross-country skiing and snowshoe use in winter. The park also offers several ranger- guided tours during the summer, including boat tours of Rainy Lake and Lake Kabetogama, and each fall there’s a historical reenactment of the early days of Voyageurs called Ghosts of Voyageurs. Pets are allowed.
