This heavily wooded campground is on the shores of Fenske Lake, a small but attractive lake known for good boating, fishing for bass and northern pike, and swimming. There’s a short hiking trail within the campground, as well as several miles throughout the forest itself. Sites are very generously spaced, affording lots of privacy. Pets are allowed. This part of the state is one of the most scenic and beloved areas in Minnesota. It’s also steeped in history. Originally settled by the Ojibwe, the northeast area was soon discovered by Europeans who came looking for trade routes and posts. Fur trading was a booming business until the mid-1800s, when the traders and trappers moved farther west to the Mississippi headwaters area.
