Shell City Landing Campground is on the Shell River, which joins the Crow Wing River Canoe Route, making this a paddler’s paradise, while others can enjoy river fishing and swimming as well as hiking trails. This campground is close to Itasca State Park. The primitive sites in Huntersville State Forest include tables and fire rings and the peacefulness of a forest location, as well as a decent amount of privacy. Pets are allowed. Minnesota may be best known for its northeast corner along Lake Superior, and certainly that’s a strikingly beautiful place, but the northwest part of the state, while very different in terrain and feel, has great beauty as well. Even better, it has excellent outdoor recreational opportunities.
