Located within Huntersville State Forest, the real draw of this primitive campground is the 24 miles of horse trails, including two loops and a river crossing. The Shell River and Crow Wing River come through the forest as well, offering canoeing and kayaking opportunities. Those arriving without horses can enjoy river fishing and swimming as well as hiking trails. This campground is close to Itasca State Park. Campsites are generously spaced. Pets are allowed. Minnesota may be best known for its northeast corner along Lake Superior, and certainly that’s a strikingly beautiful place, but the northwest part of the state, while very different in terrain and feel, has great beauty as well. Even better, it has excellent outdoor recreational opportunities.
