The Big Bog Recreation Area campground provides access to 2 excellent features: Upper Red Lake is full of walleye and northern pike, while just north of the campground is the Big Bog itself, a 500-square- mile peat bog that’s the largest in the 48 contiguous states.
An environmentally friendly 1-mile boardwalk allows visitors to get deep into the bog and see the flora and fauna it contains, including rare orchids and carnivorous plants. There are additional hiking trails and 10 miles of snowmobile trails in winter. Snowshoeing is permitted, except on groomed trails. Campsites are not entirely private, but there are trees throughout, providing plenty of shade. Pets are allowed.
