Because moorings here are somewhat exposed, Clark Island gets fewer overnight boaters than other state park islands in the northern San Juans. The island includes paths winding through madrona bordering its shores, a gravel beach on one side and sand on the other, plus extensive tide pools to explore. Its location allows radically different approach routes. The southern route from Doe Bay on Orcas Island is the shorter, though it requires a ferry ride from the mainland. The launch point at Doe Bay Resort offers opportunities to camp, rent a cabin, or just take a soak in their hot tubs on the way home. The northern route originates in the Lummi Indian Reservation between Bellingham and Ferndale. Few kayakers think to use this northeastern approach to the San Juans; it has significant advantages.
