Just beyond the mills and marinas of Everett’s waterfront, Jetty Island has both wildness and antiquity: seabirds and sea lions can be seen near the rotting barges that were beached long ago to stabilize the shifting sandbars of the Snohomish River estuary. This island also offers an excellent opportunity for a solitary beach hike in the Seattle area—winter months guaranteed. The navy’s homeport facility on the east side of the Snohomish River channel south of the marina provides other big sea-going attractions but doesn’t detract from the nature of Jetty Island or interfere with access to the river’s channels. The waters outside Jetty Island have become popular with kite surfers seeking surfable waves on high wind days. Paddlers with the appropriate skill level can also enjoy paddling here while catching large wind waves.
