This is one of the most interesting and long-range day trips in Puget Sound, and the ability of foot passengers to carry kayaks aboard ferries allows 10 miles of one-way paddling. Leave your car in Seattle, walk your boat aboard the Bainbridge Island ferry, paddle through Rich Passage and Port Orchard to Bremerton, then take the ferry back to the city. State parks along the way make nice picnic stops with old military installations to explore. To make this into an overnight, stop at one of three Cascadia Marine Trail sites: Fort Ward on the south end of Bainbridge Island, Manchester State Park on the south side of Rich Passage, or add a 2-mile side trip to Blake Island (see the Blake Island chapter).
