A narrow isthmus connects Maury Island to Vashon Island providing an age-old portage. The most challenging route here combines the quiet charm of Quartermaster Harbor with a more arduous paddle along the “island’s” south coast to produce a circumnavigation that will leave you feeling you have seen a great deal as well as had a good day’s exercise.
For a more relaxed alternative, dabble in the harbor. If you wish to start from south of Seattle, launching from Saltwater State Park involves a more demanding crossing, traversing shipping lanes and possible tide rips.
