Henderson Inlet offers a serene place to paddle, especially when compared to other, more trafficked inlets of south Puget Sound. This is partly due to the absence of public beaches or boat ramps excepting a limited launch place for hand-carried boats and because a fair amount of undeveloped and protected shoreline remains. A reclaimed gem along the western shore, Woodward Bay Natural Resources Conservation Area, has been transformed from a Weyerhaeuser timber storage and transport facility to a lush oasis of wildlife, managed by the DNR. Waterfowl, seals, great blue heron, and numerous other shoreline and marine creatures call this home, consistently providing a prime wildlife viewing destination. However, access is tightly restricted to protect sensitive wildlife habitat, so pay close attention to current regulations.
