The skinniest of major Puget Sound inlets, Hammersley is a saltwater river ride if you time the currents right to transport you from one end to the other. There is the possibility of making a fairly easy round trip by coordinating your return with the tidal exchanges, enjoying a snack and exploring the shoreline at your turnaround while you await the current’s reversal. Hammersley Inlet was completely overlooked by Peter Puget’s expedition and not discovered for another fifty years, possibly due to the overlapping points of Cape Horn and Cape Cod near the inlet’s entrance, which mask its true character. Once this inlet was found, the fertile uplands quickly became and still are a primary source of timber.
