The Elwha River provides summer boating in a pristine Olympic river valley with fine views of the surrounding mountains. It is easily reached just off US 101 a little west of Port Angeles. Elwha means “elk” in the local Indian tongue, and the valley is an important wintering place for the large Roosevelt elk. Putting in at Altaire Campground, you will find rapids that are exciting but not very difficult on a gorgeous river.
