With its variety of launch and take-out options, this ambitious, 15-mile paddle to the sea through dense stands of redwood forest can easily be broken up into shorter sections. It’s also popular as an easy overnighter and can be extended into a 30-mile, multiday adventure by launching as far upriver as Healdsburg. The farther you get from the coast in the summer, the more both water and air temperatures begin to rise as you leave the sea fog behind, along with immersion gear like wetsuits and paddle jackets. Rather than the coastal kayaker’s usual preoccupation with hypothermia, you might find yourself slipping out of your boat and into the water in little more than your bathing suit, just to cool off.
