Once traversed for its entire distance by the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the Jefferson meanders peaceably through thick cottonwood bottoms while providing good fishing and excellent wildlife viewing. This river is suitable for practiced beginners its entire length. The Beaverhead and Big Hole rivers merge near Twin Bridges to form the Jefferson, which then flows generally northeast for more than 80 miles. The river winds and braids repeatedly through mostly arid benchland and irrigated farmland, encompassing a wide band of thick, brushy riverbottom. For those who like to drift back in history as they float down rivers, the Jefferson offers a gold mine of river lore.
