The Roque Island Archipelago has long been considered one of the most beautiful areas to explore on the Maine coast. Cruising guides wax poetic about its magnificent headlands and the long crescent of sand beach on the main island. You’ll probably find several yachts anchored in Roque Island Harbor or tucked into the small cove on its western edge. Most of the islands in the archipelago are owned by the Gardner family, which has established a research station and private nature conservation area on its holdings. There is no public access in this area, and while yachters may enjoy the beach and protected anchorage, kayakers have been warned off. There is concern that the impact of small-boaters will disturb ongoing research.
