This is a beautiful and varied day of paddling, but it should be undertaken only under good visibility. If the fog clamps down on you, it is best to hug the nearest known shoreline and pick your way back along the eastern side of Eastern Bay; then shoot across to the south of Sheep Island, following the buoys into Pig Island Gut. While this is less direct, it will keep you out of boating channels as vessels head in through Main Channel Way and Mud Hole Channel. If you are fortunate enough to still be along the eastern shore of Great Wass when the fog moves in, you can simply backtrack along your route. If you don’t believe that fog can be a factor in this area, simply review the data from the Moose Peak Light, which is automated and operates in heavy fog an average of 1,600 hours a year. And of course, fog is most prevalent during the peak paddling months of July and August. Only the light at Petit Manan does more fog duty.
