One of the reasons why we like this trip so much is the put-in at Saturday Cove: small, quiet, and very homey. Saturday Cove is just a slip of water below Bayside and Temple Heights. There’s an old boat house and railway, and the pier is shaky at best. But it’s easy to launch, and the site itself makes a nice picnic spot with its rope swing and cool shade in the summer. Launching from Saturday Cove also cuts down on your crossing mileage for a hop over to Warren Island State Park, which sits just south of Grindel Point off Islesboro. Warren Island has some short hiking trails that connect overnight shelters and picnic areas as well as privies and potable fresh water at the hand pump in its interior.
