Johns Bay offers a wide range of sea kayaking experiences and skill requirements. The bay’s upper reaches and the Johns River offer a protected and pleasant afternoon’s paddle exploring a shoreline of salt-water farms with a picturesque backdrop of evergreens and granite ledges. But Johns Bay has its wilder side. It opens to the south, and a long fetch will often send a sizable swell into the lower bay, the same swell that is crashing on Pemaquid Point just a short hop to the east. If this swell is opposed by a strong offshore breeze, things can get very choppy and confused. These are not conditions for a relaxing paddle.
