Eagle Island was once the summer home of Arctic explorer Admiral Robert Peary. It is now a historic site maintained by the state and open to the public during daylight hours. There is a cottage furnished much the way it was during Peary’s residence with some of the family’s personal belongings on display. It was here that his wife, Josephine, received his telegram on September 6, 1909, stating that he had reached the North Pole. The island is a beautiful one, with gravel and sand pocket beaches for easy landing and a saltwater pool on its north end that is replenished and scoured clean with each tidal cycle.
