One of the most interesting sites to visit is Fort Gorges, which sits just over a mile from the Eastern Promenade. The fascinating remains of this fort, construction of which was begun in 1848, are owned by the city of Portland, and the site is open during daylight hours. There is little to the island other than the fort, which sprawls over the ledges that are part of its foundation. From the Eastern Promenade you also have easy access to Back Cove, which is a shallow piece of water better known for the path that encircles it. This is a favorite jogging, walking, and in-line skating path that sees constant foot traffic. Back Cove is clearly visible from I–295, and while it isn’t a quiet paddle, it’s an interesting one if you like urban paddle trips.

You can rent a sail boat from Portland Yacht Services, located near the international Cat ferry terminal. Beautiful place to sail, although can be busy during nice weather.
