From the time you begin to float down the Hoosic River you get a sense that the river is just a bit frustrated. Many thousands of years ago the Hoosic valley was part of the Housatonic watershed. But a little geological revolution shoved the Hoosic north and west, forcing it to become part of the Hudson watershed instead. The Hoosic just doesn’t seem comfortable with this arrangement. Its rapids writhe through twisting turns in search of an easier course never found, and it noses impatiently along mountains, seeking a passage through them. Add to this the occasional confinement between human-made riverbanks that increase the river’s speed, and you get a stream that can seem just a little edgy.
