The nine miles from the Old Covered Bridge to Rannapo Road is a journey of peace and quiet. The river is undemanding, save the few blockades of strainers and meanders through rural landscapes as inviting as an Andrew Wyeth painting. The continuity of features, wide floodplain, farms and riparian forests make this reach seem easy to describe. But it is not. This stretch of river contains a measure of magic that makes each journey a new adventure. The river environs absorb you, hypnotize you, so at times you don’t remember how far you’ve come or how long a journey remains. In many ways it is the nicest of all the wonderful trips on the Housatonic.
