Upper Highland Lake is a pastoral place with rolling hills that wrap around the attractive forested shore. That alone is sufficient reason to visit, but Upper Highland Lake and the surrounding D.A.R. (Daughters of the American Revolution) State Forest offer an amazing array of recreational opportunities. There are two campgrounds, sandy beaches for swimming, miles of woodland trails, an overlook with a fire tower, a wheelchair-accessible fishing area and nature trail, and two boat-launch areas. The trailhead of the Nature Trail even has a relief map that includes information written in Braille. The entire area is neat and tidy with well-maintained roads and thoughtfully placed signs. It is no exaggeration to say that the D.A.R. State Forest really does welcome everyone and tries to make all visits comfortable and enjoyable.
