I Discovered West Lake and its smaller sibling, Abbey Lake, a few years ago when I was wandering around the back roads in search of new places to paddle and hike. The Army Corps of Engineers created them with governmental practicality in the 1960s. Over the intervening decades both lakes have blended into the ecology of the area. The dams still let you know they owe their existence to people, but the wildlife and scenery could convince you that these lakes have been here for centuries. West Lake is pleasantly private and Abbey Lake even more so. Odds are that when you visit West Lake your boat will be the only one on the water. And if you choose to portage to Abbey Lake, your privacy is just about guaranteed.
