The circumnavigation of Grand Island is a nice off-season trip, offering protected waters and pleasant, sandy places to picnic. The downside is that much of the route resembles a house tour of the rich and famous. Grand Island consists of steroid-fed Federal and Nantucket-style summer houses sitting conspicuously on intensely manicured lawns. Furthermore, Cotuit’s oppressive parking restrictions are decidedly inhospitable to nonresident kayakers. Yet again, it’s ultimately an enjoyable ride. Focus on the beautiful marsh north of the put-in; the protected barrier beach between Grand Island and Nantucket Sound; and the clean, productive waters that made Cotuit the “oyster capital of New England” in the early 1900s. Attractions: Salt marsh, bird-watching, fishing, sandy barrier beach for picnicking and swimming.
