The southwest corner of Harwich is home to one of the most extensive freshwater marshes on Cape Cod. The Herring River flows through the West Harwich Conservation Area and gives paddlers an opportunity to view the gentle beauty and elusive inhabitants of the marsh. Kayakers follow the narrow tidal river through conservation land to a freshwater reservoir. The paddling is easy, although shorter kayaks have a better time negotiating the river’s tight curves. A portage over the dike and into the reservoir allows paddlers to search for the plentiful painted turtles that reside there. This is a good family or beginner paddle. Attractions: Freshwater marsh, bird-watching, fishing.
