Pleasant Bay offers hours of terrific kayaking, and a full day can be spent exploring its nooks and crannies. Especially beautiful are the quiet islands of Little Pleasant Bay and the passage along the bay side of Nauset Beach, all contained within the Cape Cod National Seashore. Much of the bay’s shoreline is crowded with large homes, but the islands of the bay are mostly undeveloped. At high tide, Pleasant Bay encompasses 7,285 acres of salt water and is one of the most biologically diverse and productive marine habitats on the East Coast of the United States. Although the bay is protected from the Atlantic’s big surf, don’t underestimate the winds that can blow steadily across the bay and raise whitecaps. Summer winds often pick up in the afternoon, then diminish again at dusk. The best paddling is therefore in the early morning, when neither the wind nor the recreational boaters have yet risen. Tourist-free, bird-filled fall is the optimum season. Attractions: Cape Cod National Seashore, fishing, bird-watching, islands for picnicking.
