Why kayak down a twisting, tree-choked stream? You can barely travel a mile before branches grab your paddles. Yet paddlers come because it’s quiet, earthy; alive with bugs, birds, and flowers; and totally different from other trips on the Cape. The east branch of the Pamet River doesn’t offer much paddling (hardly any!), but it does provide an hour of escape into a lush, wild garden of freshwater marsh. Best for Walden wannabe’s, miniaturists, naturalists, and loners, this brief excursion clears the head and renews the spirit for one’s next adventure into the noisy, open spaces of Cape Cod Bay or the Atlantic Ocean. Take a short plastic kayak and breakdown paddle for greatest flexibility in this narrow stream. Attractions: Narrow river through a freshwater marsh, bird-watching.
