This challenging paddle takes kayakers across busy Salem Sound to an island offering pleasant picnicking and exploring. Great Misery Island was once the site of an elaborate summer colony whose ruins can be rediscovered along the hiking trails that cross the island. Now owned by The Trustees of Reservations, the island is open to the public for a small fee. On the way to Great Misery, kayakers pass a variety of small islands, most home only to seabirds. This is an interesting and rigorous trip. Kayakers will not be disappointed with the scenery, history, or challenge of the paddle. Attractions: Historic Marblehead Harbor; Great Misery Island for picnicking and hiking; scenic Salem Sound and islands.
