This Fabulous Trip Circumnavigates beautiful Castle Neck and combines exciting open-water paddling with intimate salt-marsh gunkholing, all in one of the most scenic spots in coastal Massachusetts. Bird life is magnificent in the spring and fall, and the unspoiled scenery is spectacular year-round. Because this trip requires paddling in unprotected Ipswich Bay, it is not recommended for novice paddlers. The fetch is huge at Crane Beach, and waves can build to considerable heights at the sandbar in front of the beach. In addition, tidal currents can create steep waves at the entrance to Essex Bay. For a safe and enjoyable trip, spend some quality time with your tide tables and weather radio. This is a marvelous trip with challenging passages—it requires kayaking with care and forethought! Attractions: Beautiful salt marshes, Crane Beach, Hog (Choate) Island, superb bird-watching.
