When the water is up, the Middle Branch offers a fast, sassy romp that’ll challenge open boaters and even give closed boats a good time. Continuous rapids with rocks and haystacks, a good gradient, and backwoods scenery are typical. No rapids need be scouted, although the pace is almost nonstop. A road parallels the river, even though it isn’t always seen. The last half-mile before Littleville Dam is a little harder than the rest; here the Middle Branch rushes madly through a narrow section, twisting and churning over the many rock patterns.
