About half an hour south of Boston is an interesting tidal rip known to boaters in the area simply as “Cohasset.” This short class II drop has amused summertime whitewater paddlers in and around Boston since at least the late 1960s, when dam releases for recreational boating were virtually nonexistent. It remains an interesting play spot with features that change constantly during the two- to three-hour window as the ocean rushes inland through a narrow gap. The setting is unusual: a picturesque seaside town with yachts and fishing boats moored in the harbor and a marina jutting out over the water just above the tidal rip.
