The drive to these bodies of water is breathtaking, with dramatic views of the surrounding mountains—Number 5, Three Slide, Hardwood, and Hardscrabble. At the boat access of Fish Pond, we were greeted by several families of Canada geese grazing on flat grasslands and marsh across the pond. As we watched the low afternoon sun turn the billowing clouds hovering over Spencer Mountain to shades of gold and red, we knew we had come to a wild place. Other than the few people who come to fish for trout and salmon, you are likely to paddle here pretty much alone. Prominent fish species: lake trout, brook trout, salmon, and yellow perch.
