The state of Maine preserves and maintains Carlton Pond and Carlton Bog as a waterfowl-production area. We found it suitable not only for waterfowl but also for paddlers. Indeed, Carlton Pond remains one of our favorite places to explore. Because development has not intruded on the vast marshes here and to the immediate north, this is an excellent place to look for moose. In the spring and at other times of high water, one can paddle almost the entire bog area, and it would take most of a day to explore every nook and cranny. Because it has a maximum depth of only eight feet, the entire pond, except for a few narrow channels, is literally choked with nearly every species of aquatic vegetation found in this part of Maine.
