Horseshoe Pond is small and shallow, but its magnificent setting, with steep hills hovering on all sides and two very different nearby hiking trails, prompted us to include it. A couple of small cabins stand on the Horseshoe southern end of the pond, but the north end is protected as part of the White Mountain National Forest. The tree-covered hillsides give way to dense shrubbery along the shore. Rhodora, a type of rhododendron that boasts clusters of beautiful rose-purple flowers in late May, dominates the shoreline. There is little marshy area, but that is more than made up for by nearby Moose Pond. Prominent fish species: brown trout, brook trout, and smallmouth bass.
